Before you can weather the storms of Kairos, we need to size you up - and that means knowing your age. Depending on how old you are and your region of the world, there may be some restrictions in the name of safety for yourself and others. So, we're going to talk about the ones that apply to your SHiFT Accounts for Borderlands 4.

This can be a little confusing, so hang in there with us while we explain. Each platform (Epic, Steam, Nintendo, Xbox, or PlayStation) may do it a little differently, and when you’re playing Borderlands 4 on that platform, their steps and age information are what will apply. That means if your PlayStation account and your Xbox account have different ages, you may have different restrictions. Still with us? Good!
PlayStation and Xbox will report your age and region to us, and based on that age and region, we will determine if you are allowed to access features such as online multiplayer, voice chat and SHiFT friends when you’re playing that console’s copy of the game. For PC (via Epic Games Store or Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2, when you get into the game, it’ll check if we know your region and birthdate. If not, Borderlands 4 will ask!
You can always choose “Stay Offline” if you don’t want to supply this information, but you won’t be able to access features like online multiplayer, voice chat and SHiFT friends. Date of birth gets locked in, so once you submit it, you’ll have to confirm that it’s right one more time. If you’ve entered your birthdate already and linked your SHiFT account, even if you use a different platform, we’ll have you ready to go, no need to enter it again!
2K follows both country/region and game-specific requirements around personal information collection and game access for younger gamers. Unfortunately, children cannot access certain game features in Borderlands 4, such as online multiplayer, voice chat and SHiFT friends. They can still access single player and local multiplayer modes.
For those accounts that have newly reached the allowed age for a feature, such as voice chat or profile visibility, those may default to being turned off. All you need to do is manually activate them, and you’re ready to make your voice heard across Kairos!
Sure, you can play multiplayer on any platform where we know your age, provided you meet the minimum age requirements for your country/region, even without a SHiFT account of your own. The only thing that requires a SHiFT account is redeeming codes and accessing certain social features such as SHiFT Friends.
