Borderlands 4: Shared Character Progression

PUBLISHED:
UPDATED:

Load the confetti cannons... we're happy to be adding Shared Character Progression to Borderlands 4

What is that?

In short, you can carry over your wins between all of your characters. This feature allows progress from one character to be shared to another existing or new character.

Wait, what progress is included?

Shared Character Progression includes collectibles, activities, SDU points, and map progress - which will all now be the same from one character to another. If an activity is completed on one character, it will be completed on all characters.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is the feature retroactive? Does progress from a Vex save carry over to another existing save with Amon?

  • Yes, existing character saves created prior to the 1.7 update on May 28, 2026 will have all of the map progress from other characters.
  • This progress is combined from all characters, so, for example, if one character has the Fadefields region fully explored and another character has the Terminus Range region fully explored, the shared progress will make a third character have both of these areas already explored.

What do you mean by "collectibles" and "activities"?

  • Collectibles include:
    • Echo logs
    • Dead bolts
    • Evocariums
    • Lost Capsules
    • Vault Symbols
    • Survivalist Cache
    • Auger Shrine
    • Electi Safe
    • Propaganda Tower
    • Vault Fragments
    • Special DLC content
  • Activities include:
    • Safe Houses
    • Silos
    • Crawlers
    • Ripper Drill Sites
    • Auger Mines
    • Order Bunkers
    • Special DLC events

Can I opt out?

  • Yes! Starting with the 1.7 update on May 28, 2026 you can now disable Shared Progression on each new save file.
    • Vault Hunter saves created before the update cannot retroactively opt out.
    • Shared Progression will be chosen as you start that new Character save, right after you select your Difficulty.
    • Once chosen, this cannot be changed for that save, it's locked in.
    • When choosing a save to play, you can see via tooltip if that one has Shared Progression active.

Does a new, co-op player get to see the uncovered fog of war from a player who has more progress? Does the new player benefit from their map?

  • When you're playing co-op with friends, the joining player that doesn't have save data doesn't receive any progress from the host. The joining player will only have fog of war uncovered for the areas they themselves explore.

If I delete all my character saves from the game menu, does that reset progress?

  • When you're deleting character saves in game, even if you delete all of them, it doesn't reset progress. A new character created after the 1.7 update with shared progression turned on will still have all previous map progress.

Does deleting all saves out of game (including the profile save outside the game) reset progress?

  • Deleting every save outside of the game will reset progress. New characters will not have previous progress in this case.
  • Deleting only the profile.sav file will also reset all progress.

What if I share a computer or console?

  • If you share the platform account (Steam, PSN, Xbox Game Pass) then your saves will progress together.
  • Keeping your platform accounts separate will also keep your saves separate.

What happens if I lose progress due to a crash?

  • Generally losing one save shouldn't cause a loss of what you've unlocked so far.
  • That said, if the game data or full profile.sav file is corrupted, then that could lead to a total loss of all Shared Progression.
  • We aren't able to restore any progress lost this way.
