Borderlands 4: Vault Hunter Cross-saves Unlocked

PUBLISHED:
UPDATED:

Cross-Platform Saves are coming as part of the Version 1.8 update on June 25, letting you seamlessly continue your Vault Hunters' adventures across different platforms where you own Borderlands 4. That's right, your saves can now be accessed across the various platforms using your SHiFT account.

What does this mean and where do I find the options?

You'll be able to upload, download and play your save files from any of our platforms with this update. Most of the interaction with this feature will happen on Character Select.

Can I keep my saves local if I want to opt out?

You'll have a choice between Automatic Sync and Manual Sync for cross-saves.

How will I know if my character is cross-saved?

During Character Select you will see an icon next to your Vault Hunter's name with its sync status:

  • No icon means the save is not synced and doesn't have a save attached to your SHiFT Account
  • is for a successfully synced save
  • is for a save ready to be downloaded locally
  • is for a save that is currently unavailable to download
    • Most often this is because you are offline or the SHiFT service is currently unavailable
  • is for a save that has a conflict
    • You'll see this when your current build is newer that the sync you are choosing, and you may lose progress by loading this save
    • You can see the details of your issue by selecting the icon
  • is for incompatibility
    • This is usually when the save was created with a newer version of Borderlands 4 than you are currently running with, and cannot be loaded

Where do I see the last time my save was synced?

Any time you check the menus on the pause screen it will display the last time a sync occurred.

What are the errors I can run into, and how do I fix them?
  • Save Failed
    • If your error says you can only have 25 cloud saves, you'll need to remove one before adding this new save
    • In case your console or platform is out of space, you'll need to clear room to download this save
  • Save Conflict
    • There's a conflict between your local and cloud save versions of the file and they are considered out of sync, you'll need to choose which one to use
    • Choosing Cancel here you will continue playing on the local version of the save, and it won't attempt to sync to the cloud the next time you play that character again, if you try again you'll keep receiving the same prompt until you make a choice
  • Version Conflict
    • Some conflicts can be detected due to version mismatches.
      • If the cloud save is on a newer version, you can keep playing your local save, but keep in mind that using your local save will create a conflict if you try to upload it later, so it is better to just update your game before playing this save.
      • When the progress on your local save is further ahead than your cloud save, using your cloud save will override your local save, progression could be lost.
      • When the save was created on a newer save and there is no local version of this save yet or the local version is also made with the newer game version, you cannot play this save until you update your game version

If I only have one platform, can I still use cross-saves?

Since there's nowhere to cross over to, there is no cross-save option unless you have multiple platforms with Borderlands 4 linked to the same SHiFT account.

Will my SHiFT Rewards like Golden Keys transfer between platforms?

SHiFT Rewards are platform-specific. If you had a code for a reward like Golden Keys redeemed on only one platform (Steam, for example) it won't show up on you inventory for another platform (like PlayStation).

Does this mean my saves can be restored if they vanish or I delete them?

No, this is not a cloud-save that will protect you from lost save files.

I downloaded my save, but I’m missing achievements, what do I do?

Certain platform achievements may not unlock immediately on download, but with a restart of your platform, and then loading your save, you will be able to see them again.
